Selfie in the Eyes of an Idealist
By Marie Gabrielle Bernabe
It’s hard to miss those self taken
pictures of your friends in social networking sites when you go online and it
can be infectious for some. What IS a selfie for a non-selfie? Reality does not
only exist in the little world of gadgets and social media. Reality is the mist
that binds us to this world. Reality is the big world to be discovered and
saved. Selfies are sometimes a personification of our self-love that cuts us of
that what binds us to reality. Selfies can also represent individuality and
expression that differentiates you from the crowd. It is inevitable to have
this kind of changesin society as time progresses. We all know that environment
now, but think about things that happened before, before people got
self-absorbed.
Before, the youth were enthusiastic in
improving the world they lived in and improving the world of the ones who will
come after them. They persevered to become the children of discovery, the
children of science and arts…the children of revolution. They moved to the
streets to proclaim injustice, they became leaders who led great nations. They
became mothers and fathers, but before they were the passionate youth who had
something to prove. Sure, they made
mistakes, but those mistakes weren’t enough to make the people forget their their
greatness and their contributing works. The children are the future of each
nation. But looking at this generation, doubts are visible since all they seem
to ever care about is how many likes they get on facebook.
Some kids seem to be living in a
solitary life thinking of only one thing: themselves. The kids used to busy
themselves with brainstorming on how they could change the world for the good
of the society and spending sleepless nights trying their theories over and
over again just to obtain their goal. Now, why is it that the youth doesn’t do
these things anymore? Is it because everything had already been invented and
discovered? NO. As long as there’s life, there will always be something left
undiscovered.
Selfies show individuality too. Only
you have that face that can make you special among the rest. Self expression is
not a crime, it is actually an outlet of one’s self to his soul. And with the
countless misunderstandings in the world, people need to express themselves
better. It’s all in the execution of
this expression.
Selfies are the trend lately, but will
it be the trend of the future? Will your selfie matter when the future is at
stake? Reasons for posting these selfies are for show and popularity, and
there’s nothing wrong with having fun and showing off your faces, but too much
is clearly addiction to yourself. Narcissism is boldly shown now, or maybe
those people just need to be aware of what they are doing.
Despite the growing popularity of
selfies, some still remember what’s important in life. Everyone can be both:
both a selfie taker and still a humble citizen who’s sensitive to the needs of
others and his country. It’s all in the execution of this expression. Selfies are the trend lately, but will

(like me) don’t think selfish of you .
This generation lack foresight of what
their actions today could do to tomorrow. We should all keep in mind that the
future is in our hands and that the smallest mistake of today could affect not
only your life, but maybe the lives of your neighbors. People won’t stop trying
until they are satisfied, and that is good as long as it’s the right decision
to make. Post a picture of yourself everyday, then answer your ten year old
child’s question on how you spent your childhood when you had the chance to
change the future but didn’t.
