The Fourth year students had a seminar on basic first aid last September 10, 2014 with guest speakers Mr. Ryan N. Tizon and Nichol P. Begosa Wemt first aid specialists, at the GSCS library.
As a subject in their Citizen’s Advancement Training (CAT), the Fourth year students attended a seminar entitled; First Aid, CPR and AED Standard Fifth Edition Introduction to First Aid. They had guest speakers Mr. Ryan N. Tizon who is the Medic Chief of the Ambucare E.M.S. Solutions and the Deputy Medic-Chief of the Dapitan Fire Rescue Volunteers, and Mr. Nichol P. Bergosa Wemt, the Senior Medic, Fire/Medic OIC of the Dapitan Fire Rescue Volunteers.
The seminar’s objective was to help provide knowledge and confidence about Basic First Aid and to learn how to stabilize patients. They defined first aid as the “immediate care” for the injured person; they made it clear that first aid does not replace the need for medical care. First aid is easy to learn as it could be performed by people with no medical license, given that they practice/do first aid according to their level of skill and training. They say that the first aider is anyone who uses limited resources to help the injured to  prolong life. The responsibilities of a provider include: recognizing the medical emergency, helping the injured, identifying the hazards and ensure  personal safety, activating the EMS system and providing basic first aid.
Another subject they discussed was the Legal Considerations when giving first aid. Duty to Act refers to the Fire fighters, police, life guards who are able to perform first aid. Negligence is harm done due to care. Good Samaritan Law; this says that being an aider for an emergency is voluntary and must be done without compensation, the job is prudent and reasonable. On Consent, one must ask the injured if he would like to be helped because the consent of the person always matters. “Implied Consent” could be given if the person is incapable of seeing his need for help (instable mental status, a child, unconscious etc.) First aiders must also consider their own personal safety as given by the acronym SETUP which stands for S-top, E-nvironment, T-raffic, U-nknown hazards, P-ersonal safety.
The basic first aid instructions on how to treat various wounds, burns, cuts, asthma, bleeding and strokes were also discussed while how to apply direct pressure on a bleeding wound was even demonstrated for concrete examples.
